College Football Picks 10/27- Part 2

Next round of games

Top Picks

Ohio St pk at Penn St
Nebraska -1 vs Michigan
Washington +3.5 vs Oregon St

Leans

Florida -6.5 vs Georgia
Colorado St -6 vs Hawaii
Notre Dame/Oklahoma under 48

Writeups

Ohio St- A lot of credit is being given to the Penn St head coach for his team's performance under such difficult circumstances. However the Nittany Lions have been getting wins against lesser teams. They will be facing a big step up in talent against the Buckeyes. Even with Ohio St's qb situation being a little iffy, the Buckeyes overall talent will prevail against on the road.

Nebraska- The Huskers are starting to put it together and although their defense has been struggling, they are facing a Michigan team that has been out of sync on the offensive side of the ball all season. The Huskers will score on this Michigan defense and will be able to do enough on defense to get the cover.

Washington- There is no love lost between these teams and Washington matches up well. Both teams have been playing pretty rugged defense. This will not be a shoot out and Washington will need a big performance from their QB who has been a little underwhelming this year. I like the Huskies defense to hold their own and for the offense to make a couple of key plays and for the Huskies to get another big upset win.

Florida- Late pick here. The gators will continue to take care of business with their stellar defense.

Notre Dame/Okla- I don't expect a lot out of the Irish offensively but I do like their defense to prove against a high flying offense how good they really are. I think there will be some big plays on both sides but not a lot touchdowns. Look for some dramatic stops for the Irish defense and conservative play calling from the offense as the Irish will try to win this one late.

Colorado St- Not a lot of highlights for either of these teams and this is a tough spot for Hawaii to play motivated. Meanhwhile CSU will be very excited to get a win in front of the home crowd.

College Football Picks- 10/27 Part 1

Enough is enough, my picks have been struggling the last few weeks and I am turning that around today.

5 Star

S. Carolina -13.5  vs Tennessee

Top Picks

Kentucky +14 at Missouri
Oregon -30.5 vs Colorado (first half)

Writeups

S. Carolina- Nothing typifies the brutality of the SEC schedule better than what happened to S. Carolina. A few weeks ago they were in the BCS national championship and looking dominant then a couple of tough losses to high quality teams, they have pretty much dropped out of the conversation. Although their standing has dropped, their talent has not. This week they have the Vols on tap and I do expect them to release plenty of frustration on the field.

Tennessee after a nice start, has pretty much fallen apart. Their strength is their passing offense however it does not match up well against the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks have a fierce pass rush and they will knock the Vols qb down all day. This game lines up to be a blowout so get on board.

Kentucky- Tough season for these teams. Likely Kentucky will have several coaching changes including potentially the head coach. Meanwhile, Missouri is definitely having some buyers remorse about joining the SEC. I do like both teams to be motivated get their first SEC win in this game and look for a good effort from both teams.

Kentucky will be facing the backup QB and that will give them the edge in this one. Mizzoo's offense just does not function as crisply with the backup in. I do like the Tigers to get the win but the spread is too thick to cover so take the points in this one.

Oregon- Much has been made about Oregon's fall in the BCS standings. I expect Oregon to put on their usual dominant performance, put the game away and then pull the dogs off. The Ducks know that their time is coming as long as they keep winning so expect them to blow away the Buffs early. So get the first half locked in and then keep an eye on the other afternoon games.

College Football Picks 10/20 Part 2

Time to step it up a bit, here is my afternoon slate.

Top Pick

Navy -2.5 vs Indiana

TCU -1.5 vs T. Tech

BYU +12.5 vs ND and over 41

Leans

Michigan -8.5 vs Mich St

Buffalo +9.5 vs Pittsburgh

Writeups:

Navy- Using a bad pun, Navy has righted the ship after a rough start. They have this game well scheduled. Indiana is coming off a tough loss in that they had a chance to actually beat Ohio St and really stepped up and played well. Now they need to go on the road, to a non conference game and play against an option team. If the Hoosiers coaches can get this team ready for this one, i will be shocked. Indiana will put up some points but they will not be able to handle the option over the course of the game and their offense will not keep up with the Navy ground game. Lay the small number and cash in a big play.

TCU- The Horned Frogs had a blip against after their QB left the program but have recovered from that. they have a very favorable matchup in this game. TCU has their trademark nasty defense and they will be able to hold T. Tech in check in this one. The Red Raiders had a break out game last week however they are not a truly good offensive team. TCU's offense won't light up the scoreboard but their offense will be put in good positions throughout the game and will score enough to win the game and cover the 1.5.

BYU- The cougars laid a big time egg last week and their vaunted defense got shredded while ND continued their winning ways and stellar defense. I have seen this situation many times over the uncountable number of college football games I have watched. A team rises to heights that they have not been before and then quickly stumbles. Now this does not happen every time but I do see ND coming into this game very overconfident against a very motivated BYU team.

BYU was in a somewhat similar spot last week. Their defense had been tremendous and they were playing against an unproven QB and they were simply not prepared. I put that on their coaching staff and coaches rarely let that happen two weeks in a row. BYU will come to play in this game. ND though does have a superior team and will show up in this game. Look for BYU to come out strong, get the early lead and ND will adjust and eventually seize control. In the process, the game will go over 41 and BYU will cover the spread.

Michigan- The Wolverines have been on the wrong side of this matchup recently and finally have the better team. Offensively, UM has not broken out against a good team and this will be a good test to see if Denard Robinson is ready to return to form. The big difference in this game will be MSU's inability to throw the ball. UM will be able to handle the run well enough to get their defense off the field and Michigan will be able to take advantage of field position to get an advantage and force Michigan St to throw the ball which will not go well for the Spartans. This won't be a pretty game but Michigan will pull away slowly and cover the 8.5.

Buffalo- Taking this game as they have the schedule trend I like, home after 3 away games. This worked with E. Carolina earlier in the season. I am downgrading this to a lean though as Buffalo was not competitive in their 3 losses and not sure if the home crowd will be all that inspirational. So I am going with the trend but treading lightly.

College Football Picks 10/20 Part 1

One pick for me on the early slate...will be back with a full lineup for this afternoon.

Top Pick

LSU/Texas A&M over 53

Writeup

This total seems counter intuitive to me as both teams have generally been known for their defenses. For A&M, that has of course changed with their new head coach however for LSU scoring touchdowns has been an issue to say the least. Conventional thinking would have LSU's explosive defense slowing down the Aggies and then grinding it out on offense to get a win or for A&M, their offense doing just enough to pull out a win against a pretty hapless LSU offense.

Yet, Vegas put this total relatively high compared to their past results. That makes me pretty confident that LSU will be able to move the ball against A&M and conversely the Aggie's offense will be able spread LSU out and identify the favorable matchups and get in the end zone.

Take the over and enjoy an entertaining shootout.

College Football Picks 10/13 Part 3

Here are the rest of my picks for the night game. Don't forget about LSU as well!

Top Picks

Washington +14 vs USC
Tennessee +3 vs Miss St

Writeups

Washington - Since Steve Sarkisian has taken over at UW, he has had some nice wins over USC. With that confidence and a few favorable matchups, I like UW to hang tough in this one. USC of course has the explosive offense but their offense line itself is just ok. They have had some breakdowns and got off to a really poor start against Utah before recovering. After Stanford, this will be the best defensive line they will have faced and it will not be easy.

UW offense has not been lighting it up but they do have some pretty decent weapons. They will not light up USC but with a strong defensive effort and with a respectable offensive performance, Washington will cover the 14.

Tennessee- interesting matchup to see whether a team playing a light schedule full of cupcakes (Miss St) vs a team that has had a challenging initial schedule (tenn) will fare better. Miss St is off their best start in years however it has come against weak competition and they are playing a Tennessee team that has played really well at times and poorly as well.

I do like the Vols to give Miss St a real challenge. They have an explosive offense and Miss St will need to adjust to a higher level of competition. Look for a fast start from the Vols and we will see if the Bulldogs can can come back. Don't be surprised if the Vols win this one but they will definitely cover.

College Football Picks 10/13 Part 2

If you have not see my 5 star picks for today, then please scroll down and check those out.

Here is my next round of picks. Keeping these plays small as I will be loading up on the 5 star plays.

Top Plays

Notre Dame -7 vs Stanford

Leans

Northwestern/Minnesota over 52
Texas Tech +4 vs W. Virginia

Writeups

Notre Dame- Taking away Stanford's big win against USC and their record has not been that impressive. Stanford really needs to be able to run the ball to be successful and they have not proven that their offense can play well away from Palo Alto. ND's defense has been solid all year and they will be all over the Stanford run game and will forcing the pass. I don't see Stanford being very effective.

On the other side of the ball, ND won't score at will against Stanford as the offense vs defense match up is pretty even. However ND will use field position and turnovers to score more than enough to cover the TD.

NWU/Minn- Both teams are coming off a tough road loss and will be looking to get back on their winning ways. Neither team wants to get a 2nd big ten loss and be relegated to the 2nd tier of the big ten race. Both coaches are offensive minded and will rely on their strengths in this one. I don't think this will be a track meet but both teams will score TD's as opposed to settling for field goals and will get over 52.

T. Tech- Counting on the oddsmakers being right in this one. W. Virginia is rolling right now and playing a T. Tech team that got smoked last week. Yet, the line is only 4 points and that seems way to easy for the Mountaineers. Look for W. Virginia to stumble a bit in this game and for T. Tech to cover the 4 in a close game.

3 5 Star College Football Picks 10/13

I will have more games tomorrow however make sure to seriously consider pounding these games on Saturday.

It is pretty unprecedented that I would give out 3 five star plays on a single day so don't take these games lightly.

5 Star Plays

BYU -5.5 vs Oregon St (3:30 EST)
Alabama -22 vs Missouri (3:30 EST)
LSU -3 vs South Carolina (8:00 EST)

Writeups

Normally, I don't put the times of the games down but wanted to make sure that you can plan properly for these 3 games.

Also, a wise friend once said "you can't roll out of bed pick all favorites and expect to be Vegas". I wholeheartedly agree with that and will have some dogs tomorrow but these 3 picks were lasered out of the many games tomorrow so don't worry about hitting up all favorites.

BYU- two things going for BYU in this one. The first is that Oregon St is simply overrated. They are a good team but not a top 10 team. Frequent readers will know that in college football and basketball, i am always looking for an unranked team to be a favorite over a ranked team as this has been a consistent moneymaker. This game of course meets that criteria perfectly. The pollsters have Oregon St #10 and the oddsmakers see it the other way; that BYU is the better team. Go with the oddsmakers every time.

Second, Oregon St is playing a second string QB. The game came out BYU -2.5 and went off the board for a few days when the qb situation was unsettled. Once the starter was declared out the game went to BYU -6 and has been bet down a little by those who believe in Oregon. The fact of the matter is that Oregon did not have much offense to begin with and with a back up they will really struggle.

Don't be surprised if this game is close at halftime and even with Oregon having the lead at half. Their defense will stand up for a while. However, BYU will take control so if the game is close at half then double up on the Cougars as they will dominate the 2nd half.

Alabama- speaking of defense...Bama has it and Mizzoo is going to be on the wrong side of this beating. I have had both Bama and Mizzoo as 5 star plays but this one is going to be all Bama. First of all, they are flat out more talented top to bottom. Mizzoo would not have had a chance even if their starting QB was playing and with a back up in, it does not seem fair.

Mizzoo's defense will do all they can and they will play well for a while but the short fields, turnovers and special teams will put them in too many bad spots and they will not be able to contain Bama's defense. Also don't fear Bama taking Mizzoo lightly, Saban will not let that happen.

Another side to take is Alabama team total over 32.5. The Crimson Tide will put up 40+ points. EZ.

LSU- This may be my favorite pick so far this year. First, South Carolina is all that right now, Spurrier has it working, they have tremendous defense, have smoked the competition including putting a sweet beat down on Georgia last week. Life is good for the Gamecocks.

LSU lost last week to Florida, their offense has been nonexistent and they struggled against Towson St. Good god man! But lo and behold, the Tigers are a 3 point favorite but if you ask most college fans they are picking South Carolina.

Taking a deeper look, South Carolina simply does not beat LSU especially on the road. In college football this means something. Look no further than last week. Northwestern was the supposed better team but they do not beat Penn St very often and they lost a game they could have one. South Carolina is not ready to take that big step and win in a hostile LSU environment.

Also, everyone is on USC who is not in the know. Vegas could have made Carolina a slight favorite or a pick but they know the public will be on the gamecocks by giving them points. The books know the action will be on the dog and they will make a killing on this one. i love LSU -3 but it may pay to be patient and wait for the line to drop. It really does not matter though, LSU will play their best game and dominate this one from start to finish.

I have been middling the last few weeks and am ready for a big Saturday. Don't miss out!

College Football Picks 10/6

Heading off the grid later today so here is my full slate. Lot of top notch match ups to keep an eye. Get the DVR set.

5 Star

Penn St -2.5 vs Northwestern

Top Play

Ball St/NIU over 66.5
Florida St/NC St over 54
Oregon Team over 43
Florida +2.5 vs LSU

Lean

Vandy +7 vs Missouri
Purdue +3 vs Michigan
Miami/ND over 53.5

Write ups

Penn St- It's always tough for a team to start out unranked and to be able to break into the top 25. NWU has been playing great ball and cracked the top 25. Unfortunately it will be a quick stay as they will lose their first game of the year. I like this game for 2 reasons. The first is that Penn St is the favorite here eventhough NWU is the higher ranked team. Pretty much the oddsmakers are telling you they are the better team. The 2nd reason is that NWU just does not match up well against PSU. NWU rarely beats this team because Penn St is much stronger on both lines and physically tougher. NWU has closed that gap but not enough to go on the road and win this one. Big play on the Nittany Lions today.

Ball St/NIU- Should be a fun MAC game with both teams leaning on their offenses to get wins. A high total in 66.5 and it may start slow but the TD's will end up coming fast and furious and this will get over easily.

Florida St/NC St- Very tempting to take Florida St -16 here as well but I think NC St will open up the offense today and will do enough scoring to make the over a lock. Florida St will do their part and NC St will throw the ball around to either their team or to FSU and set up touchdowns either way.

Oregon- Taking the over on Oregon's team total. This is almost a 5 star play. Not sure what Washington will bring tonight offensively but unlike the Stanford game their defense does not match up well against Oregon. Stanford missed all kinds of completions and Washington won't get that luck again. The Ducks will blow past the 43.

Florida- Although i am a big fan of the SEC, i have not been picking too many of their games. I feel that I am getting a better sense of the teams now and do like the gators to win this one. LSU is still suffering a hangover from last year and this will show tonight. The Gators defense can handle the one dimensional LSU offense and will do enough on offense to get the win and the cover.

Vandy- I think the Tigers will get their first SEC win today but it will not be easy. Vandy will look at this game as one of their better chances at getting and SEC win as well so they will come in motivated. Take the points here.

Purdue- jumping on the Boilermakers bandwagon here as the home dog.

Miami/ND- Should be a fun event as these old rivals get together. ND is the better game and will get the win however Miami has a speed component that ND has not faced yet and they will be able to put up some points. This game won't crush the over but will get there.
